Most of the old Union Station is now Crowne Plaza’s most famously known venue for weddings and events. The Grand Hall, with its stunning grandeur, contains two 20 feet in diameter wheel windows and a 60’ barrel ceiling above, which dominates over 3,200 square feet of original stained glass.
Reminisces of WW1 are also still with The Grand Hall. During WW1 the wheel windows, were “blacked out” with black paint in order for the building to not be easily seen from the air. The original wheel windows are still intact in the hall, but now have a slight grey tint.
The Foyer of the Grand Hall is where, just over a century ago, 500,000 people used to pass through monthly to catch the 200 trains that steamed through daily. It also features a three-story red brick and pink granite structure. Known as a “geometric phenomenon”, the structure remains one of America’s finest, and Indiana’s first Romanesque-revival style building.
Not original to Union Station, but an addition that holds an interesting story all on its own, is the Grand Hall Bar. Once Norman’s Restaurant during the Festival Market days, the bar itself was flown over from Italy and is over 100 years old.

Abraham Lincoln, on two occasions, passed through Union Station. Once was to give his famous inaugural address, in Washington, DC and on his way to lie in state after his assassination. Also, a prior employee of Union Station working as a telegraph operator was Thomas Edison. He was eventually fired for conducting too many useless experiments on the job.
